When you stop smoking your body may suffer some withdrawal symptoms. Side effects can include anxiety attacks, weight gain, lethargy and headaches.

Cigarettes contain carcinogenic substances, many of which are known to cause various types of cancer. Some of the toxins found in cigarettes are also used in rat poison, nail polish remover and some types of wood varnishes. Smoking cigarettes can be highly addictive as it causes a ‘high’ when the nicotine hits your bloodstream. When you stop smoking, this can cause a craving, which some people find very hard to give up.

There can be some side effects to giving up cigarette smoking and these include: headaches, irritability, weight gain, cough and a feeling of being tired and lethargic. These side effects are generally minor and go away quickly for most people. If you do suffer from very severe headaches, or a persistent cough, when you stop smoking it would be advisable to consult a doctor. These withdrawal symptoms can be both physical and psychological.

Lethargy and Headaches

Some people tend to feel very tired and lethargic during the first few days of giving up smoking. This is just the body’s response to a lack of stimulant. Like coffee, nicotine stimulates the central nervous system. Headaches are also common and are just a sign the body is ridding itself of toxins. Both these side effects generally subside within a few days.

Cough and Sore Throat

Cough, dry mouth and sore throat can all occur in the first few days of giving up smoking. Coughing is just a sign that the lungs are clearing themselves of tar, and other toxins that have accumulated over the years. Avoiding second hand smoke may help the symptoms, along with a cough syrup and throat lozenges.

Weight Gain Issues

Weight gain can be common when you stop smoking, and women often tend to gain more than men. This weight gain is usually fairly minor and outweighs other health benefits of quitting smoking. Sometimes weight gain can be a result of eating more and snacking in place of having a cigarette. Snacking on healthy fruit or nuts may be helpful.

Irritability and Anxiety Side Effects

Giving up smoking can be stressful, and some people suffer from mood swings, irritability and depression. Physical activity can be useful, along with yoga and breathing techniques. Try walking, joining a gym, jogging or taking up a new hobby. Nicotine replacement can be helpful in the short term.

Other symptoms you may experience when you stop cigarette smoking can include dizziness during the first few days, anxiety attacks, sleep disturbances, nightmares, constipation and gas, tightness in the chest and slower heart rate. Some medications may also leave your body faster when you give up smoking. If you are taking any prescription medications it may be worth talking to your doctor.
