Homeopathy and Naturopathy are just two holistic approaches to alternative health. Naturopathy also uses the mind body connection as a healing aid.

Holistic medicine is a treatment plan which takes into account the whole aspect of a patient’s life, from physiological to psychological and social and environmental issues. A holistic approach differs from most conventional, or allopathic, treatments as it aims to treat the whole person rather than just the symptoms. The mind body connection aspect is also taken into account. Alternative health practices include homeopathy and naturopathy.

The Mind Body Connection

For centuries healers have believed there is a strong connection between the mind and the body. Current research into holistic medicine and naturopathy is now backing this up, and numerous studies on alternative health practices have shown the benefits of mind and body for healing and disease prevention. It is well-known that the nervous system controls almost every part of our physical well being. Our thoughts and emotions trigger chemical reactions in our bodies which can either enhance, or inhibit, the immune system. Fear or foreboding can increase hormone levels which can have a negative effect on the brain which can, in turn, make the body vulnerable to various illnesses. Naturopathy often focuses on these issues.

The Holistic Approach

When we are emotionally upset, or going through physically stressful situations, the nervous system works to release hormones which increase the body’s metabolism. This is known as an inflammatory response which can trigger disease. It is thought that long bouts of repressed anger may contribute to arthritis. On the other hand, a positive state of mind can help alleviate some diseases and even reverse symptoms in some cases. A holistic approach to alternative health does not ignore the physical symptoms, but will try to discover the aspects of the patient’s lifestyle that may be causing the problems.

Alternative Health Treatments

Homeopathy, naturopathy, ayurveda and herbal medicine are all considered as alternative health treatments and fall under the holistic medicine banner. Homeopathy has been used for around 200 years, since German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann experimented with his theory that like cures like. The theory is that a minute dose of a substance that causes illness in a healthy person can relieve similar symptoms in someone who is ill. Naturopathy is based on the belief that disease is caused by a breakdown in the body’s natural balance. Rather than treating the symptoms, a naturopathic doctor will look for underlying problems causing this imbalance. Naturopathy combines therapies such as hydrotherapy, yoga, relaxation, nutritional advice and massage.
